PostSubject: Re: RPG THREAD: Continuing the Hunt   Wed Oct 28, 2009 5:18 am

The mandalorian blinked as he heard the howls and was pleased to know his suspicions were quite correct. It also meant that if the Gorax was sending out its hounds after him, then it could not be far behind. The hounds must have been part of the same pack as they had attacked in unison and from both sides as well. Figuring Mesh’la could handle one of the hounds on her own Mav took towards eliminating the other.

He had a few seconds before the beast was on top of him and he used this opportunity to pull off a quick shot that snagged the creature in the shoulder. By the time it forced Mav to maneuver to avoid its charge he could already see the fur being singed and the burnt skin from the incendiary round. The mandalorian lined up another shot and this one punched through the throat.

Despite being fatally wounded, the hound was still in a blood craze and continued to assault the mandalorian. Mav took a dive to avoid its most recent pounce and then rolled up but with vibro-machete in hand. As the beast took a leap he lifted the blade up over himself and was knocked onto his back as the weight of the creature slammed down on him. Though when he was not dead he knew his move had worked; the hound had effectively impaled itself on the vibroblade which continued to hum its electric song within the confines of the hound’s corpse. Thankfully he had merely been caught underneath the hound’s leg and was able to wiggle his way out from underneath. The mandalorian noticed how the other hound had gone quiet and nodded to her kill.

Mav was reloading his rifle when he heard the thumping of footsteps and the enraged roar that followed. So it knew its pets were dead then. The mandalorian made for the other corpse thinking that Mesh would be near it but was frozen in his tracks when he saw the Gorax just ahead. With some deal of luck it had not noticed him, but rather was fully intent on something else. Mesh. Mav sprinted to cover and began to line up his shot when with a loud crack and rumble the tree it had been so intrigued in came free. The mandalorian shifted his aim to see what it was after though he had assumed, and then knew what had been hiding within. Mav bit his lip in a rare display of emotion while he was in his hunter’s state of mind as his options began to race through his mind. He could take the shot then, but also risk not killing it and then have it crush Mesh in rage, or (Goraxs were known to take prisoners as livestock) trail and await the perfect opportunity.

Perhaps Mesh would be able to handle it herself after all though, and to do so would certainly earn his utmost respect. The mandalorian held off from firing for fear of the first possibility becoming the case and waited to see what would happen before making another move.

For a brief moment, Mesh'la was stunned into inaction by the sheer size of the creature towering above her. It had lifted the fairly large tree she had been hiding beneath as if it was a mere twig. She watched it throw the tree to the ground, which shook the forest floor and almost made her fall over. Finally inspired to move, she fired first at its feet, intending to topple it. The shots were so ineffective, she might as well have been punching a solid duracrete wall with bare hands for all the good it was doing. If anything, it only annoyed it further as it roared and stomped.

Several times she had to play a similar game to that which she had with the boar-wolf. Ducking and weaving, she narrowly avoided being crushed into the ground. Breaking into a sprint to gain distance from the hazards of the Gorax's tree-trunk feet, she barely made it to a stretch of thin trees before it had pushed them over, blocking her path. Turning on her heels, she cursed, a string of expletives that Mav would probably pick up through his helmet if he was listening. Cornered by the forest itself, she raised her rifle and braced for an assumed squishing of some kind, but instead, it wrapped a furry hand around her waist and lifted her to eye level.

Its giant brutish eyes examined her helmet for a moment, looking more curious than hungry... or so she hoped. She was helplessly pinned between fingers that were easily each the size of her entire body. Held so tightly, she could barely breathe from the pressure being exerted on each side, cutting off her air supply. Wriggling as much as the creature gave her room for, she was surprised to find she could pull one arm free, and used the opportunity to reach for a grenade. It was her only option, as the hand holding her blaster was still stuck fast.

Her vision started to spot a little from the oxygen depletion, and she knew she only had one shot. Lobbing the detonator after activating the switch button, she watched it sail in an arc straight for the behemoth's ear canal. How far in her toss had gone, she couldn't be sure, for at that moment she passed out from the lack of air. The last thing she heard consciously was a bang followed by a deafening screech of pain.

-------

The Gorax, with its minimal brain capacity, realized that the throbbing it now felt in its skull had come about from it standing around too long, and immediately took off further into the jungle, still clutching its prize. Fortunately for the Mandalorian in its grasp, the pain it felt caused it to hold its prey more loosely as it ran on a full sprint back toward its dwelling. Blood dripped from the beast's gargantuan ear, falling to the ground where it pooled in large puddles that mixed with the flattened earth beneath its feet.

-------

Dutifully, the small remote known only as "Owl" kept its perch upon Mesh'la's shoulder, calculating the fact that if it disengaged its claw-foot now, its thrusters would never be able to keep up. With a small electronic whine of concern, it noted how the woman slumped to one side, evidently losing consciousness. Still, she was alive, and her vitals were stable for now. Owl transmitted back to Mav an A/V feed along with the statistical data on its assigned charge. Until otherwise ordered or unable, it would remain with Mesh as loyally as it had remained with Mav all these years.

Mav watched helplessly as the beast scooped up the other mandalorian and held her with little mercy. Should it tighten its squeeze further he knew the beast would surely crush her within its grasp. It meant he still couldn’t take a shot and not be risking Mesh’s life at the same time. Knowing that Goraxs often liked take those they captured as a meal for later comforted the mandalorian somewhat as he most likely would have a chance to free Mesh.

A loud bang drew him out of his calculations and he watched in surprise as the mountainous Gorax stumbled in pain before seeing it flee off into the forest. He presumed it could only be heading to its den with such speed and apparent understanding of where it was going. Unfortunately, the pace it had set was far faster than the mandalorian could handle on foot, even if he had discarded his gear to lighten his load. That meant his best option was to attempt to board his ship and catch it that way… or he could bring up some old ties.

The mandalorian took off a sprint to where he knew a village in the trees to exist, and they were perhaps the only ones that could provide adequate transportation for getting through the dense forest. He received a message from Owl who apparently was still accompanying Mesh’la though he had never doubted the droid would abandon her after he ordered it to keep after the woman. Apparently his comrade was unconscious, but other than that perfectly fine. That was good, and it meant he still had time.

Meanwhile, the towering figure of the Gorax stumbled through the foliage, swatting at its ear every now and then with its free hand as if that would make the pain go away. It reached the entrance to its lair and staggered inside clumsily, still clutching Mesh’la like some kind of warrior doll.

It had carved out a shelter for itself in the side of a very large hill. Within the cavern lay very primitive settings such as hand tools and a crude fire pit. Perhaps the most elaborate of all the devices owned by this particular Gorax were the numerous cages, some hung from the ceiling and others upon the ground. Animal pelts covered the dirt floor in a patchwork quilt of varying shades and textures. As the Gorax came into the room, one hand to its head in agony, it picked one of the sturdier cages and tossed in the Mandalorian. Twisting the door to the cage shut, it promptly fell on its haunches and then onto its face, blood continuing to flow as it soaked into the hides.

Now that the mighty being had fallen still, Owl disengaged from Mesh’la’s shoulder pauldron, nudging into her softly while issuing a quiet twitter that wasn’t far from morning birdsong. It was trying to wake her up.

After just a few minutes, brown eyes fluttered open behind the visor, and Mesh’la groaned as she awoke.
“Owl?” she asked, sitting up very slowly. “I feel like I was run over by a Ronto…” she muttered, poking herself in several places and finding that most of them hurt. She was sure to bruise like an overripe pika fruit.

Adjusting to her surroundings, she realized where she was and grumbled. Getting out of the cage wouldn’t be difficult. Getting down from it without hurting herself further would be.

Poking her head through the bars as far as her helmet would fit, she noticed the Gorax on the floor below them and smiled. So her little plan had worked. And better than she would have imagined; the dead thing beneath the cage was so large and furry, she didn’t doubt its cushioning ability now that it wasn’t trying to squeeze the life out of her.

Putting a gloved hand to her thigh, she found her vibroknife and slowly worked it through the cage’s bars. Made of mostly vines and wood, it was somewhat slow going, but she managed to make an opening large enough to slip between. Without allowing a second thought to cross her mind, she nodded to the remote and then made a leap of faith, landing with a soft thud on the hirsute back of her recent foe. Immediately she turned on a filter for the air she was receiving through her helmet. It stunk horridly of sweat and burnt flesh.

“C’mon beskar’ika. Let’s get outta here,” she declared, beckoning to the remote as she slid off of the corpse. She briefly thought to take something from the Gorax as a trophy, but decided against it. Not only did she have nowhere to store a trinket at the moment, she realized she had no need for it. There was really no one to impress, and had never been much of the sentimental type anyway. Except when it came to…

…her rifle! She must have lost it when she fell unconscious! She wasn’t about to let that one go. It had been her father’s and it really was the only thing she had left of him aside from a few fading holoimages. It meant she would have to retrace the brute’s steps, leaving her open to whatever else lay in wait amongst the leaves, but that was a chance she was willing to take.
“Keep an eye out for my tracy’uur, will ya?” The spherical droid beeped and bobbed in response.

Reverse tracking was fairly simple, but the Gorax had certainly covered a great deal of distance in its travel, meaning that it could easily be a long while before Mesh’la came across her weapon, if she even found it at all. It was looking rather hopeless when all of the sudden, Owl chirped excitedly and zoomed forward, causing Mesh’la to have to sprint in order to keep up.
“Hey, wait! Owl!! Where are you going? Is it my—“ she started to say, but was cut off as a large net swooped around her, lifting her just a few feet off of the ground.

“What the haran is with this world and hanging traps?!?” she cried angrily. Figuring it was probably something that the now-deceased Gorax had devised, she wasn’t too concerned as she fished for her knife yet again. Before she could pull it from its sheath, however, a dozen tiny spears were all pointed in her direction. “You have got to be kidding me…”

PostSubject: Re: RPG THREAD: Continuing the Hunt   Wed Oct 28, 2009 8:45 pm

A small alert from Owl brought up a screen of what it was seeing some distance away. It was a rather large cave that was just the right size for a gorax to settle in, and then the view panned to reveal Mesh working away at her cage. Mav smirked; she didn’t stay down for long did she? Of course he didn’t have much room to talk, plus she was his senior. As Owl turned again he noticed just how very still the gorax looked and concluded its demise must have occurred shortly after it reached its den. That was good for two reasons; one was that she had managed to kill a gorax, and the other was that it should be relatively easy for her to get back should Owl show her the way.

Pleased with how things were progressing he minimized the display on his HUD so that he could get a better view of his surroundings. Already the mandalorian could feel eyes on him, watching every move he made all the while evaluating the cloaked figure moving through the forest. Coming up to a very well disguised trap Mav stopped and looked around him. There was bound to be a few ewoks guarding it should it be triggered and so after lifting up a branch and slipping it into the cord he did just that. The trap snapped on the branch and Mav released it as a few Ewoks jumped out of the brush. “Long time no see,” he shrugged as the ewoks watched him curiously.

Back to where Owl was hovering nervously as the ewoks bound Mesh to a lengthy stick and hefted her over their shoulders, the droid couldn’t help but bob in confusion. The ewoks were registered as neutral to allies in the droid’s processor but then a fellow mandalorian ranked higher. This process of logic helped it naught and so it resorted to observation for more data to produce an answer from.

From the pack of Ewoks one that looked far more decorated than the rest stepped towards the droid in the air and tapped it with a claw. This registered to the droid which started sending a new alert while simultaneously opening up the old feed on Mav’s HUD. This leader tilted his head to the side and prodded at the mandalorian as they moved back towards the village.

Mav snickered, they sure weren’t being too hospitable with the mandalorian woman, although no harm would come of her till night should he not intervene. That meant he had time to work on getting supplies which is what he set out to do. The ewoks that were watching him nervously had picked up his scent which reassured them some as to his identity. Once it got around that he was a friend, venturing into the village was hardly difficult .

Various ewoks offered much for trade, and both parties left rather happy with their bartering. The sound of drums signaled the arrival of another batch of hunters, but this time they carried not a beast but rather a human, granted the mandalorian had already known this from what Owl had shown him. Turning to the ewok near him he mentioned, “Oh she can cook for a bit, no rush.”

The ewoks slipped the captured mandalorian over an unlit fire pit and then left her alone save for the two guards stationed near her. Mav walked by and leaned over to her and chuckled, “Now look what you’ve gotten yourself into couldn’t just have stayed put where you were?” The mandalorian walked off to continue bartering while the day was still young.

“HEY. Oh come on…don’t be like that…MAV!” Mesh shouted, knowing it was utterly useless. She sighed. Mav had successfully renewed the sentiments she felt toward him earlier that morning. In between thoughts of giving the red-headed kid a good throttling, she glanced over to where the two guards were standing.

They looked so harmless, even with their spears. She doubted they would do much more than glance off of her armor unless used with precision. It really was humiliating, being held captive by something so…cute. If only she could get free somehow, she could take the two guards without a problem, even unarmed. She figured they probably didn’t even reach her hip level when standing.

Suddenly an idea sprang to mind. Owl was still floating around her, since Mav had never ordered it back to him, and she intended to use this to her advantage. “Owl’ika, gaa’tayli ni dayn olar…” she said, using Mando’a in case the guards knew any Basic.

The remote bobbed as if it understood, and at first, Mesh’la thought it might not do anything. Then, without warning, it zoomed around the two furry wardens, making sharp turns and whizzing about haphazardly. The two flailed and ran off together, Owl in hot pursuit.

The captive Mandalorian checked to make sure none of the little bear things were hiding and then started swinging from the contraption she was tied to. The movement created an uncomfortable burning sensation in her bruised muscles, but she was determined to get down one way or another. Finally, the violent rocking motion paid off, and the entire thing toppled to one side of the fire pit. She cringed beneath her helmet but looked around. Evidently the Ewoks had felt that she would be unable to free herself, but she had other plans.

She probably looked fairly pathetic, curled the way she was in an effort to semi-crawl, but there was an abandoned spear head sticking out of the grass just a few meters away. After much grumbling and scuffling, she managed to fumble with the tool enough to undo her wrist restraints. Thankfully, the tiny hands of the Ewoks hadn’t pulled the knots very tightly, and she wriggled free. From there, it was just a matter of time until her feet were loose.

Standing up, she stretched and shifted uncomfortably, swiveling her head to look around. Just then, she heard a rustling and an almost inaudible gasp, quickly followed by the sound of retreating footsteps. As she turned, she noticed one of the bear things running away from her, and it was carrying her weapon!

Mesh’la tore after it immediately, chasing it up a series of ramps and platforms, disregarding the change in elevation as she relentlessly sought her goal.
“Get back here you! That’s mine!” she called, cursing as it disappeared into a hidey hole too small for her to pursue.

Mav knew he was asking for it while he continued to push Mesh’s temper closer and closer to the edge, yet that anger was a beast he was very happy to tempt. A rapture of chuckles escaped his helmet as he walked off with an Ewok in tow. He didn’t mind Owl staying behind with Mesh, besides she needed company she could communicate with. That just left him to deal with this Ewok that wasn’t too interested in giving up the fish he had collected.

Much bickering and mistranslations pursued after they returned to the little bear’s fish rack as he attempted to barter some furs for the water creatures. They managed to organize a deal after some time and left on decent terms. It was then that a commotion brought Mav’s attention to something elsewhere in the village.

The blatant chuckles returned as he spied Mesh looking rather angry in front of a hole. Her little escape hadn’t gone unnoticed as hordes of the little furry ewoks began to flood into the area. Spears were once again pointed at the female mandalorian and Mav could only laugh. She seemed to attract trouble like a rancor to gamoreans. “You really do get into trouble a lot, you know that?” he shook his head in mock disappointment and glanced amongst the ewoks. “I’ll try to sort this out, don’t worry…” he made an amused face under his helm and was thankful that she couldn’t see it or else she might have rung his neck right then and there.

Mav maneuvered over to the leader of the bunch and squatted down next to him. They chatted for a time between each other and occasionally they’d look up to Mesh before returning to their discussion. At long last they separated and Mav slipped off his helmet looking rather bewildered. He turned to Mesh and blinked a few times, “I think I might have just saved you from not being the main course to being the chief’s mount for the rest of the day.” In time to this the little ewok jumped up onto Mesh’s back and crawled its way up to look over her shoulder.

“Oh, hara’nayc…” Mesh’la griped, trying to pry the horrid furry thing off of her back. Her efforts yielded only a sharp rap on the helmet as the creature clasped about her more tightly than before. “Ibic meg bana bat Tatoo’yaim” she grumbled further, resigning herself to carrying the annoying one around for a “while”. By a while, she only figured in a few minutes. After that, things might get ugly.

"And don't think you're getting off easy, either," she said to Mav as she moved past the Ewok crowd which had started to thin out now that their leader had struck a deal with the girl who had previously been potential food.

Thankfully, the chief was fairly light weight, but it still didn’t resolve the fact that he was trying her nerves worse than Mav at the moment. Every so often Mesh’la would hear a “twang” noise as her imposed backpack played with her antenna.
“Knock it off, di’kut. If you break it, I WILL throw you off of this ledge…” she threatened, though she was more preoccupied looking for the young one that had taken her rifle.

It took a good bit longer than her agreed-upon few "minutes" of carrying the chieftain around, but she had begun to forget about him as she came across a tree from which she heard the distinctive sound of metal on metal usually associated with weaponry. Pushing back a thin tarp, she ducked inside and found the culprit and two others taking apart her blaster. Only this time, they had nowhere to run as she was blocking the only exit.

"Hey Mr. Negotiator, mind giving me a hand in here?" she asked Mav over the helmet lines. Of course, it probably came across fuzzy, as the Ewok on her back was gripping her helmet's antenna as if he could steer her with it.

((hara’nayc = “hell no” [combined the two words], “This never would have happened back home on Tatooine.” ))

Mav raised his hands in surrender as she gave him a bit of warning. The mandalorian would have to make sure he didn’t fall for anything equally embarrassing if not worse for she would undoubtedly be attempting to have the worst happen to him. It actually sounded sort of fun to him and a challenging grin formed underneath his visor.

“I don’t count on it,” Mav gave a flourishing bow to the woman as she stalked off with an ewok ever so hilariously toying with her antenna. Hopefully it wouldn’t play with it so much that it broke or else he knew he’d end up having to pay the bill for it.

He heard his named called and figuring that she couldn’t have plotted her revenge so quickly to also have it set up, but still being cautious none the less, rushed over to see what she had done this time. “Oh, I see…” he glanced between the three ewoks who were toying with the blaster which he knew to hold sentimental value to Mesh and it was something he wouldn’t let be torn up.

Regretfully he gave up the fish he had been so intent on bartering for and slapped them down on the table near the rifle and snatched it from their little paws. One had managed to make off with a bit of the rifle and caused Mav to have to lasso the little bear in with his whipcord. “Gimme that,” he growled and snatched the part from the ewok before handing it over to Mesh, “that better?”

“Somewhat. But haar’chak, they scuffed up the scope somethin’ fierce. I think I’ll have to replace the lens. Then again that could have happened when I dropped it. What are these things anyway? I never even got to ask,” she said, referring to the Ewoks now scrambling around her and out the door. Like most of the native creatures to the moon of Endor, Mesh'la had never heard of Ewoks, and certainly had never seen them before.

The current occupant of her back plate was temporarily forgotten as she set about piecing her rifle back together, making sure nothing else was misplaced or broken.

Mav nodded along as he tried to see the damage she was describing to the scope, “I’ll fix it up for you if you want; I’m good with scopes after all,” he patted his own to reassure this fact. It was in a peculiar place compared to the norm for instead of being mounted directly on top of the rifle it was in fact mounted slightly to the left to facilitate the general operation of his rifle. This scope placement also enabled him to still efficiently use the iron sights should an enemy slip past the effective range of his scope.

“They’re ewoks, cute little guys aren’t they?” he laughed and patted one on the head as it fled the scene, “Good hunters too, and rather good with figuring out tech that you give them but don’t expect much development. I guess they’re sort of the jawas of Endor, though much less likely to steal your droid and very spiritual,” Mav glanced to the chieftain situated on the woman’s back. It was amusing how she seemed to have generally forgotten about the ewok even as he began to pull apart the woman’s braids. It gave a happy “yub, yub” as it pulled away and gave Mav a look that seemed to say: Good thing we didn’t eat her, because she sure is fun.

“Nah, I can fix it myself. I just don’t have a spare lying around is all,” Mesh explained, only putting up her rifle when she was satisfied that the lens was a solitary issue. As for the Ewok on her back, she hadn’t forgotten him so much as ignored him, but now the tugging on her once neatly-braided hair had gotten annoying.

Reaching behind her, she grabbed the little bear-person by the waist and placed him back down on his own two feet. Even when he made a semi-growl of annoyance, she merely pointed her index finger at him.
“That’s quite enough out of you,” she scolded, apparently just sternly enough that the little chieftain decided to run off and find something else to occupy its time.

“I don’t think “cute” is the word I would use,” Mesh’la answered as Mav asked what she thought of the hairy little devils. Yanking off her helmet, she used her fingers to brush out her hair, and then quickly redid it into one long braid down the back of her head. Replacing the bucket, she spoke through her speakers. “So then. Are your dini’la kih burc’yase going to try and steal something else of mine or are we all finished here?” she teased, looking through her belt pockets just to make sure the creature hadn’t actually taken anything else.

Mav shrugged; the little bears were plenty fine to him. Granted he had grown up with them in his backyard and he often competed with them for getting the best pelts, but that didn’t mean an outsider to the batch couldn’t get along with them right?

“Either way they’ve got you outnumbered, lots of fur and lots of spears,” he chuckled as he shifted his rifle so that it rested on his back, “I guess so.” The mandalorian left the hut and whistled to himself as he walked through the village that was suspended ever so high up upon the trees.

Quite pleased to be going back to Mav’s treehouse and to be getting away from the pestering Ewoks, Mesh’la hummed a soft tune. Her version sounded almost akin to a lullaby, though it was in fact a Mandalorian war song. The tune went hand-in-hand with lyrics most violent, not at all the kind of thing most would think to sing to their little one. But that was the Mandalorian way; familial nurturing and a hearty thirst for battle often wrapped into one ideal.

Nor did Mesh’la’s thoughts entirely match the pleasantness of her tone. She had recalled Mav’s stunts from earlier and had gone back to plotting his payback, successfully hatching a fairly solid plan by the time the upraised dwelling came into view once more.

The pair moved to the lift and Mesh’la entered first, hovering a gloved hand over the panel that would take them to the higher levels. She still disliked the feeling of the ground distancing itself from her feet, but at least if she pressed the button, it gave a false sense of being in control.
