Besides costuming and such, how do you apprehend life with a "Mandalorian" state of mind? I'm NOT talking about the small things like cleaning your house, not talking much or having no friends.

For example, I decided a few years back that if I want to start a family I would adopt instead of reproducing. This is mostly because I'm carrying a load of annoying genetic ancestry that I do not care to pass on. Secondly, there are way too many orphans in this world.

I also got myself into martial arts and precision shooting (though I'm not in the armed forces) for fun.

The downside to having such an influence on my spirits is that it encourages my already unsociable character and I've become extremely selective and critical of the people I meet and get to know. I really don't ache to have company every weekend and I'm almost always focused on my family and my works.

I tried spicing up my food to try and see if I could handle a nose burning nutrient, and surprisingly it got me to eat more than I was used to for some reason. But ouch, it leaves your mouth high and dry for a long time. I'm very tempted to try and make a sweet cake like Uj cake, but not sure if I'm ready for that yet. But if there's one thing I actually could do in real life it's flying a rocket pack. But I guess that'll be the dream I'll never accomplish, but these things exist... just not rocket propelled but compressed air.

It's funny, but most of the things I am into is the reason I got into the Mandalorians - not the other way around. Wish I could say that it did though, makes me look bad. pirat

I'm a very passive aggressive and shy pushover. I want to be more outspoken and not get stomped on all the time, so I've been trying to stick up for myself more often--I call it "being a MANdalorian" in the same way someone would tell you to "grow a pair."

I also have been trying to get more in shape. I did a lot of running last semester even though my build (short and stubby) tells me I will never be a runner. :p At the very least I've been trying to obtain some semblance of upper body strength.

I want to learn how to fire a gun and defend myself in hand to hand combat! But the karate club here is way too intense and time consuming (oh yeah like I'm really going to get up every Saturday for an 8AM practice--NO), and I haven't been able to go to the shooting range back home. Basically I want to be JUST LIKE DAENNIKA. Wink

Gratulor, spicy food is amazing! I used to get this amazing hot sauce on my burritos at Chipotle, but it gave me terrible heartburn. It was great though. And you should totally try to make an uj cake and let us know how it turns out!

PostSubject: Re: How does being a Fandalorian influence you...   How does being a Fandalorian influence you... I_icon_minitimeSat Mar 28, 2009 7:39 pm

We call it "Southern Hospitality" in my world. Long story short: My husband spent time in Georiga (USA) while serving his time in the Marine Corps. He picked up the way of life in the South where friends become family and the family is extended, whether there is a blood tie or not. After I got married to my husband and spent some time with his friends from Georgia, I instantly fell in love with that concept of "Southern Hospitality." After I read Karen Traviss' interpretation of the Mandalorian lifestyle, I tended to phase out Southern Hospitality in lieu of the term "Extension of our Clan." We have actually "adopted" some very good friends as brothers and sisters. Our door is always open to anyone in our clan, and I tend to like the nomadic way the family rotates through.

I know the Mandalorians also don't dwell on death, and that's something I love about them. I always viewed death as a chance to be reborn rather than the end. So, with the concept of "Not gone, merely marching far away," I can completely relate to that as well as "I'm still alive, but you are dead. I remember you, so you are eternal."

Also, I'm kind of a loner by nature (I blame the fact that I'm a Scorpio). With that being said, I'm not one who needs a lot of people around me constantly. I have my select "clan" that I enjoy in my presence, and the occasional gathering of the extended clan is enough for me. I like being a bit of a hermit, and I thrive in my solitude.

Lastly, I "think" in Mando'a...sometimes letting a word actually slip out. This past Christmas, for instance, my dad was pointing to the parts of my toddler son's face and saying, "Nose, mouth, eyes, etc." Then, he pointed to his backside, and without skipping a beat, I said "Shebs!" Laughing Sometimes, I catch myself mumbling Mando'a curse words when I'm in work because technically it's against our Code of Ethics manual to curse outloud, and since I'm the only geekoid around there who knows any Mando'a, everyone just thinks I'm a bit off my rocker. Laughing

Gratulor, I came across this uj cake recipe from Kex's FF.net page! Wow I'm creepy.

Anyway, try it out if you want! Very Happy

And Mara, I know what you mean about the swearing! I curse in Mandalorian in my head all the time. Usually it's "Fierfek, that girl needs to wear a real shirt." or "Shab I'm running late!" For some reason I always say actual curse words when I'm talking, though. :p

Hey cheerios! Have to modify it around a bit but I'll give it a go. Thanks again! Wink

Mara, you actually reminded me of something. I have used haar'chak and haran when around my little cousins, because I curse a lot and our cursewords aren't something you'd want children to learn. Everyone around thinks it's Latin or some other language, when asked I just shrug and say you tell me.

HA! I love it.

I wouldn't say that I changed into having a Mandalorian mindset. Just like you guys and ladies, my traits seemed to fit well enough into being a Mandalorian. I'm a bit of a loner, I prefer my "extended clan" (consisting of both blood cousins as well people that are not of my blood) over lots of people.

Not to be pretentious, but I think I've taken on some minor paternal traits, that just happen to be in line with the typical "Mandalorian father." I'm serious [you might even say I'm gruff], no nonsense, to most people (they're all aruetiise)- but I open up to my 'clan' easily. Being a senior in college, I'm also surrounded by freshmen, which brings out my paternal/authoritarian traits. Of course it also helps that these traits manifest when I RP my main character, because not only is he Mandalore but he's also one of the oldest Mandos (about 43 years old, on par with the rest of the Mando NPCs from K2).

And of course my attitude is perfectly in line with the typical Mando mindset. I get pissed off easily and have no patience for bullshit, but I have a great memory for all sorts of things. Munit tome'tayl, skotah iisa.

Having completed six years in the military, I have done all the weapons, tabbing and lying in a shell scrape on stag cold and wet for days on end, which sitting here in the warm and dry looking back was cool. I still shoot and hunt, I have done Karate for a few years and I am looking into joining a Taijutsu club. I have also done sword fencing which I enjoyed but I found it a bit too genteel and just not brutal enough, which is also a plus for Taijutsu as they also do weapon work. Ideally I would love to do Kendo but there is no clubs in my area.

So I can relate to the Mando militant aspects. One thing that I have taken for the army is cynicism I question everything especially news programs I always ask way are they reporting a story that way, what are they leaving out? Also the government I don’t believe a word they say (just because I’m paranoid doesn’t mean there not out to get me!)

I would rate myself as an out going introvert I can get along with people ok but it wouldn’t worry me if I didn’t see a person for a month.
And I have a sweet tooth. Very Happy

I'd have to say that, like most of you, it's my personality and traits that made me really get into Mandalorians, not the other way around. Laughing

I took martial arts/kick boxing for five years. My father taught me how to fight ever since I could stand up. When I get my current ... issues addressed, I'll likely take up Muay Thai.

I grew up taught that family comes before everything, no matter what. I'm both an individual, and a small part of a whole. Only close friends are extended this... clan-love, I guess you could say. Once a friend passes a certain threshold, I no longer see them as a friend, but "family," like a sibling almost. When I sit down to think about it, my "family" might consist close to a hundred people. (Asian people. We're everywhere and we flock together. Razz ) We're all fiercely protective of each other, and while not so much insular like Mandalorian clans, we really do stick to each other very tightly.

I wouldn't say I'm a loner by choice. I tend to be quiet and very ... observant. My silence isn't a sign of meekness so much as a contemplative how-am-I-going-to-manipulate-this-to-my-favor thing. I'm very straight forward with my opinions: this is how I feel, deal with it. I'm relatively non-confrontational, but at the same time I'm not afraid of hurting people, and of getting hurt.

So when I started reading about Mandalorians, it just seemed like a good fit. I haven't had any gun training as of yet, but I do intend to get down to it eventually in the future, after I find the right classes to be EMT certified.

Anecdote - You make a good point about the extended family via close friends. I'd have to say that I have one surrogate brother and three surrogate sisters, because my only blood sibling is a worthless scumbag (I might even say c***, but that would offend the ladies here).

I think in real life, the idea and actual act of having surrogates relates a lot to Mandalorians, because their blood family is not always preferred. Jango's parents were killed and Jaster then became his surrogate father. Kal lost his parents and was raised by Mandos. It seems to be the logical thing to do, make connections with others who are more like you, because one's blood family is just not always top priority. It's the practical and Mandalorian thing to do to make your closest friends your adopted family.

Aye, I agree with you completely there. My vode are those who act the part, and are there for me when it counts. With me, blood relation is not a ticket to be a di'kut.

For my part, I've never had formal training in combat, but the times I've handled firearms, I did
very well anyway, and dealing with bullies in high school gave me a fair amount of self defense practice.

I already think like a mando, so it war a short leap to embracing the culture.

I'm a garrulous, direct person, and I deal with what I can see, hear, and feel. I'm very pragmatic
and would rather something be useful than look good. I'm very skeptical of most things I can't confirm myself. I have no use for faith or religion or any sort- why waste time begging a god for help when you can help yourself to far greater effect?(no offense to you religious folk)

I highly enjoy difficult challenges, like playing HALO 3 with people a dozen skill ranks above me-
after all, don't we mando'ade crave to be tested to our limits and beyond?
You learn far more by loosing, and gain much more by learning. Not to mention a hard earned
victory is a sweet taste to savor for a long time.

PostSubject: Re: How does being a Fandalorian influence you...   How does being a Fandalorian influence you... I_icon_minitimeThu May 28, 2009 3:08 am

Personally being a Fandalorian has changed my life, it has gotten me back in touch with my creative side through custom mandalorian costuming, and has made me more impulsive for lack of a better word. If I see something I want or set goals I want to achieve I am more likely to go out there and get them rather than waiting for things to happen to me. Also, I have become more resiliant, I no longer complain as much, I just grit my teeth and get on with whatever I am doing. No use crying over spilt milk. I have become more confident in my abilities, and myself.
I now value my closest friends and family more, and they mean more to me now than they did before. I have come to better terms with lost ones and have picked my sorry shebs up of the ground at times when I am feeling low, by remembering them for who they were, and the good things they did. The mando proverb "Nu kyr'adyc, shi taab'echaaj'la" (Not gone, merely marching far away) pretty much sums this up for me.
I have set more personal goals, ranging from success in school to personal health to extra-curicular activities. I am no longer as much of a procrastinator, and I am more prepared/organised.
I plan on getting my gun lisense when I am old enough, and learning to use a range of fire arms such as rifles, shotguns, and handguns, safely effectively and accurately, and also teach my children to use them safely one day. I was once told by a mentor of sorts I used to have who was quite into guns "it is not the guns that kill people, it is the people with the guns" and I believe this is very sound advice to live by.
Overall I have started enjoying life more and have a new found lust/respect for life and what it has in store for me, and therefore I can conclusively say being a Fandalorian has changed my life markedly for the better.

PSEUDO THREAD NECROMANCY

Okay, new here and very new to the Mandalorian fandom. But like a bunch of others, this thread has got it backwards: I gravitated here because of the traits I already had.

Untrue, actually. I mostly found the fandom because my friends are scared to death of my father, often referring to him as 'The Real Jango Fett,' which I didn't believe at all until I thought about it harder. It goes beyond him wearing sunglasses all the time. On research, I found that according to the culture he actually acts very, very Mandalorian. O_o

I know no one else who can nail a coke-can sized target from 20 paces with a throwing axe, and he used to be a champion fighter in the SCA before he busted his leg out. He's a very gruff man (I have never heard him say 'I love you' in my life) but he shows his care in other ways. The revelation came after being roasted out by him (I can be a stupid kid, it happens to us all) , then reading the values in Mandalorian culture and realizing they had said the Same. Freaking. Thing. As. Dad.

My sister and I aren't raised with morals in the typical religious sense. Dear Dad thought it was best do raise us with a concept of honor instead, and when we make him proud we are his 'Good Warrior Daughters.' Word for word.

If this sounds like a gushing adoration thing about my father, it is. My family and my background are important to me-- it's a great inspiration and it finds it's way into all of my work.

So there is a fandom that does sum up our way of life. Maybe we don't go out and kill things, but everything else, even onto our love of 'pleasantly' spicy food-- it's there.

So I was going around beating around my idiot guyfriends and being given lessons in swordsmanship (IE. bopped on the head) by my father and double-teaming poor hapless people in paintball with my little sister before I came here. I've been like this forever.

I just now have something to call it. Cool

I've almost completed six years in the US Air Force (as a mechanic -_-) and I love to shoot. I keep working on my marksmanship though it's still nothing to brag about. I'm also trying to become more of an outdoorsman, hunting, etc. Even picked up a US Army survival manual at the bookstore that I've been poring over. I want to learn some hand-to-hand combat, even if it's just simple boxing, and I've been working to get into better shape.

Socially, I've always been very selective of my friends and confidantes. Unfortunately I've never had a close, tight-nit relationship with my family. Is it sad that the father figure I want to emulate is a fictional character from a series of Star Wars books? Razz

I can honestly say that being a "Fandalorian" hasn't really changed my life in any profound sense or meaning.

I love the fact I made a costume and got to go to San Diego Comic Con and play dress up and show off and strut and look cool.

But other than that, I'm still who I am as I've always been. The Mandalorian teachings or life style or anything else from the fictional culture has never really been adopted into my personal life. I mean, I think the most has been my ability to accept my Granpa's passing the winter before last, but that was more of a personal way of dealing with something I couldn't change and coming to a basic understand that I can't let myself get drawn on something I can't change.

...Or maybe it was all the alcohol I drank at the time. Either or.

So, hmm...

Can't say really much influences me from the Mandalorian life style.

Well other than suddenly freaking out my non-mando (still star wars fans) friends by suddenly splurting out in mando'a for some reason or another...usually cause i made a mistake or somethign unexpected happened or I'm just angry or annoyed..yeah well the general thing.

So for me mostly the mando speaking and the mando promoting that I'm sure they're not sick of Wink

Hey forks. I haven't posted in ages, I apologize. It's around 1:30 AM where I am so I'll try and make sense here.

I was reading the 501st novel the other day (yes...SPOILERS...albeit a minor one), and I got to the part where Kal got extremely emotional when Scout was around, while the rest of his family was around, having dinner or some such. It was the aay'han, you know...where you, the individual, are in a perfectly happy and fun environment, but you suddenly start to think of dead family members and get extremely sad and emotional.

After reading that and getting a clearer picture of the exact process that it happens, I realized it occurred to me when I graduated from college this last June, in 09. At both my graduation and my graduation party a week later, I got all teary-eyed and wept because my grandfather on my mom's side (who died when I was in 8th grade, around 2000-01) wasn't there with us.

Just a small anecdote. Any more stories from the rest of you guys?
