MY ESSENTIALS:

www.openoffice.org - compatible with most, FF.net supports it too. FREE.

www.mozilla.com - I need this, because it contains a dictionary that tells me when I dorktype.

www.dictionary.com - to make sure everybody understands the same meaning of the words I type.

www.thesaurus.com - the key to being a good writer is to never repeat the same word more than twice in a page (like shenanigans, lol.) in my opinion, and I feel like a noob if I don't know how to add variety in my language

http://starwars.wikia.com - yeeeeerrrrrp!

I was lucky to get my own copy of Microsoft Word so that's my word processing program of choice.

After that:

Thesaurus.com

Wookieepedia.com

When it comes to dictionaries, I'm still in the dark ages and rely on my old Webster pocket edition. I would use the same for my Thesaurus, but it's lost somewhere in my parent's house. Wink

Tips on writing military SF - a great site for those of us without a military background or knowledge and need an insight into that life. Great to have in handy.
Mary Sue litmus test - to know if your character is in danger of being an annoying one.

Great links! I could really use the first one. Badly.

Doing the Mary Sue test is one of my favorite pastimes. I think my character Verda scored a whopping -2. Then Signe was like a 7. Haha, fail.

I mostly just use Wookieepedia for weapons, events, etc in my fanfics, and sometimes I pop on dictionary.com for words. Also I feel the need to Google image search random things like sci-fi cityscapes and the like so I can get a better feel for what I'm trying to get the reader to visualize.

I think one of my biggest tools is music though. I create playlists all the time to match a mood!

This is awesome, thanks for posting this.

I'm reading the billet article right now and I realize just how dumb I was in my writing and it makes me want to try a completely different approach with my "tactical action" scenes. The relationships between officers, NCO's and the troops can define the outcome of any operation and to illustrate my point I can't help but mention the TV mini-series Generation Kill, a very realistic and unaltered portrayal of Recon Marines in the 2003 Iraqi operations.

But that website makes me want to read more military SF in the near future, I feel like I could learn more from different authors (might even try my brains at Tom Clancy but not entirely sure about that).

On another note I remember using the Mary Sue litmus test years ago for a different character and have kept some guidelines in mind to avoid writing one. It's golden, thanks for that contribution, Gratulor!

I use a dictionary and thesaurus Wookiepedia, Wikipedia, and google/google images.

And when I need help with naming things I go to Seventh Sanctum. It helps with boredom too.
I think I used it to name an RPG I had a long time ago.

I love the Mary Sue test.
