Getting over addictive games...

Last night I dreamed of WoW again. FYI, I quit playing that game 3 months ago after 2 years of addiction (yaaay) and I thought I was over this thing until last night, I dreamed I was creating a new character to join friends into questing and doing other fun virtual shenanigans.

I woke up and was relieved that I had NOT reactivated my subscription account, and that I was still free from the the evil grasp of Warcrack. BUT NOW I CAN'T GET IT OUT OF MY HEAD.

So I'm going to make a list of things that annoyed me in the game, and the reasons why I quit:

• It ate my will to be productive. Grinding for gold and reputation had become my job.
  
• I wasted a lot of time in dungeons and raids because of people going away from keyboard, mostly young teenagers who had better things to do than to waste their time in an online game, consequently wasting MY time because they treated other players like pixels.
  
• Losing my faith in humanity
  
• Breeding hate against a virtual faction and classifying people into irrelevant categories of species that don't even exist
  
• Made me hate female gamers (OH IRONY)
  
• Made me hate male gamers pretending to be female (DOUBLE IRONY - I pretended to be male!)
  
• It in no way improves my sociability or my creative skills
  
• It contains no Bardan Jusik
  
• Near the end, being exalted with the Wyrmrest Accord and buying the red dragon for two thousand gold coins wasn't as rewarding as I had hoped
  

I think I'm feeling better now, still a little bitter now that I recall the many, many hours spent into that game, the horrifying amount of money wasted every year, and the guild drama... I don't regret it, but I still have a hard time figuring the good stuff I learned from it.

Ha, I never got my hands on any mmorpg's, but they've always held my fancy.

But now I'm curious as to why the game made you hate male (pretending to be female) and female gamers in their own right; why?

Well female players in WoW for one have this half-voiced intention to be more "elite" and more "epic" than the guys, and when they know there's another girl in the guild who is "epic" and respected by other guys, they turn into anal-retentive stuck-up bitches. True for some cases.

And male players using a female "toon" with an excuse: "I don't want to be staring at a guy's ass all day", but still I realized that in the end, they don't really care about the game. They just look at your toon's boobs, secretly hoping for a fake lesbian cyber session. This is true for most cases.

I just restarted Pokemon: Pearl.

I've had Legend of Zelda dreams where I'm a female Link. These happened after I dressed up as a Female version of Link at a couple conventions. That might have a lot to do with my dreams.

The only thing I can remember from those dreams are running around fields, meadows, and forests wearing a tunic and holding a sword. I don't know if I actually killed anything...

Besides Zelda games, I'm addicted to Person 3 and 4. I'm almost done with Persona 3 but it's really boring because I've pretty much done everything (I just have to wait for the world to end for it to get interesting again) so I play Persona 4. I'll play it and be on IM and tell Catika every little amusing thing that happens in the game.

I hope by the time I finish 3 and 4, they'll come out with a new Zelda or Persona game so I won't have to end my addiction.

LOL! Back when I played Halo every day, I had a dream that I was a Spartan jumping through space with Starfox 64 graphics. And I had another dream that I was watching a fight between two Mandalorians with lightsabers. I wish I was one of them. :/

I named my rival in Pokemon TOOLBOX. EY-OHHH! And Verda is my character's name. The actual Mando Verda would make a terrible Pokemon trainer because she would make them all her slaves. She obviously has never heard the Pokemon theme song.

Clayne would be the best pokemon trainer and Sennia would be pretty good too. Lyda would wonder why her pokemon don't love her back as much as Morj does and Tsun would neglect her pokemon. Guy would be too busy to be a good trainer. Asuna would be a really good pokemon trainer. I bet she and Clayne would be rivals.

Mandalorians as Pokemon trainers . . . That's either the greatest thing since sliced bread, or a bad crack fic waiting to happen. Personally, I say go for humor, it'd be hilarious.

As for me, I've recently figured out how to load mods for Empire at War, so I've gone back to playing that quite a bit. And let me tell you, the Stargate mod for this game is fan-fraking-tastic, though it does make me want to learn German . . .

Hmm...I've been addicted to a few games here and there to small degrees, but I've always had the willpower to eventually put them down. Or maybe I stopped playing them because I ran out of character concepts (KOTOR 1-2). Hmm....

My husband picked up DragonQuest VIII for the PS2 a few years ago, and I was addicted to watching him play it because the storyline of the fairy tale fascinated me. Eventually, I got brave enough to have him teach me how to play it (my video games range in old school Atari Pac-Man, Super Breakout, and the like).

I spent months playing the game and only got as far as the Pirate's Cove. Then, I got pregnant, and that ended my "addiction!" My pregnancy and baby became more important, and I only touched the game for a total of two hours after my son was born over two years ago.

The only thing stopping me from playing Pokemon is that I'm restarting the game over and over and trading the 3 starter Pokemon to my friend so we can have the starter Pokemon on our teams. And I can't start saving my game until we're done with that!

I got my dad to play Lego Star Wars with me for a few days. He liked beating up C3PO so he'd bee hoping around on one leg and also randomly start attacking my character because he thought it was funny.
I love that game, but it's a lot more fun to play with another person than just yourself. Even if that person is an old fart with a sick sense of humor.

Are you kidding? For some games, that's the best part of playing a female toon.

Now, in WoW, maybe not so much... but other MMOs, where you're far more dependent on other people and cannot solo most of the game? Hell yes. Mooching free equipment/money/items is the best way to play.

Of course, I was one of those die-hard, competitive, epic'd out and competent priests that everyone on WoW seems to want.

I just quit, actually. About a month ago.

WoW gives me the worst writer's block I'll ever have. I don't advise playing the game to anyone who has the tendency to get hooked and go for days without sleeping (as all hardcore gamers seem to have done several times in their lives).

As for serious addiction... I was addicted to FFXI. That game is the biggest, worst, time-sink ever encountered. The only way to progress is pray-to-God you make friends and that they're all available to level with you, as you could do absolutely nothing alone. The only reason I got hooked at all was because I was young, impressionable, and made two really good friends. But we grew apart (read: they abandoned me) and I had to give the game up, despite how beautiful it was at the time.

Sscrew rep grinds. And gold farming. I just take it as I see it. I finally got my Argent Champion the other day. I play. Maybe a lot. Not as much as I used too, though, although right now that's due to crappy computer parts. I'm totally addicted to WoW, and I don't really care. I play it to have fun, to meet some new people (which I have, and we still talk and play together), and enjoy what free time I can find doing something that I like to do.

People bug me about it, but I don't really care, because I like playing WoW. I've been playing since December of 2006, and I've taken the occasional break, but I really enjoy playing, and I think I'll be playing for the years to come. $15 a month is also a good deal in a sinking economy. Spend $15 to play WoW for a month, or spend $15 to have 1 or 2 days entertainment? I dunno. Sounds good to me, really.

Other then that... Eh, good luck staying off! Lol.

OK, remember how I said earlier that EaW was an addictive game? Yeah, scratch that, Red Alert 3: Uprising takes the cake on that. More accurately, the "Commander's Challenge" is addictive, mostly due to the fact that it's, well, a challenge! Seriously, that "Ninjas and Robots" mission was tough, I spent half the (successful attempt) match just building defenses to stop those damn ninjas from shutting down my power. Still, it was all worth it, I am now half-way done with it . . . Yes, it is very long. Part of that problem is that I'm taking so long to do things that have very finite par times. Like, for instance, there's this one mission where you have to bust apart the Iron Curtains defending some bases before you can take them out, and the the par time for it is 11 minutes, it took me 54 minutes and 34 seconds to beat it. Yeah, I got some stuff to work on.

But still, the game is absolutely incredible, even if it does have one colossal flaw . . .

Right now Dynasty Warriors 6 is my addicting game. Even though I've played all my favorite characters' story modes I'm still playing it. I want to unlock ALL the characters. Even the big fat ugly guy.




Lu Xun is my favorite character because he's the prettiest cute boy in ancient China and he likes arson.

Right now, nope. But I am seriously thinking about it, just to see the differences between the PC and xbox versions, and also to give my PC a bit of a workout, it's been running nothing but Guild Wars for the past year or so.

I'll definitely get back to you on that. You need another survivor for your Zoey?

I haven't played L4D in a while despite my friends constantly bugging me about it, unfortunately, but I always like having more people on my friends list incase I decide to play at obscene hours of the day/night.


STORY TIME
Left 4 Dead is an amazing game, but it really gets to me sometimes. I've been in a really up-down emotional mood recently so seeing the writing on the walls of the Safe Rooms really... bother me. Like, slightly sick-to-my-stomach nausea caused by things like, oh, I don't know, the end of the world.

If you listen to the commentary for some of the levels, you can pretty much tell that those survivors... didn't make it. So seeing such realistic, life-like writing on the walls, notes left behind, letters and arguments, makes it that much more disturbing, and makes the game more real for me than I think most of my friends perceive it.

I actually do get what you're saying, particularly since you've mentioned your up-down mood. Everything can seem so bleak when you're in that place, I can totally relate. But "justifying" things in your mind can sometimes turn things around. Of course the world is not all sugar sweet, far from it but sometimes, just sometimes, you're able to see the good in the bad.

The writings on the walls does exude of the "hopelessness" of other survivors, but you have to see part of the "end of the world" as something "positive".

The writings on the wall can mean plenty of things. If they wrote it, that can be something good, cause that means they made it to that safe spot to recuperate and probably plan their continued survival, an additional day of them being alive is still better than not even having made it to that safe room. Also if there are writings on the wall, that also means there are more survivors other than the left 4 dead.

From what I understand, the 4 have some sort of immunity to the infected, which doesn't mean they can't be killed, they just can't be turned, even if bitten, scratched or pooped-on, by zombies. I'm pretty sure there's other immunes out there, and uninfected of course. If there's a surviving scientist out there that can reverse-engineer a "vaccine" from the 4's blood plasma, then humanity can continue to thrive and the end of the world will only be a temporary set-back. Things can always become positive as long as someone has hope and tries hard enough to turn things around. That's what you need to see when playing L4D, these 4 are hope that humanity will continue to survive. The proverbial "seeds" to regrow the world to what it once was, before its apparent end.

In the meantime, they'll just have to continue blowing away countless hordes of undead. Unless there's a cure for the zombies, it's actually the humane thing to do, and even if there was a cure, many of them probably wouldn't be able to live with themselves knowing they may have eaten or killed loved ones. Worse yet, what if they remembered all of it once they were cured? See the dilemma? So as one of the immune, you may be doing them a favor by putting them out of their misery, and surviving at the same time.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that there's always something positive that can come out from even something that started out as negative. Don't let the thought that the end of the world could be just around the corner get to you, enjoy life day by day, live yours to the fullest so that when the zombie apocalypse happens, you won't regret anything, even if you're not immune

Lol well thank you for that at least, I see what you're saying. I just sometimes find death of other survivors (ones we have never seen) very saddening. Not to mention my own character death when a team mate of mine does something horribly stupid... like stare at me, DIRECTLY AT ME, within melee range, as I go for FULL to ZERO health because I'm tongued by a smoker.

That's just. The stuff of nightmares lmfao

The survivors developed an immunity to the virus/disease/whatever that plagued the earth. Whether or not a vaccine or cure can be developed remains to be seen (I'm not sure if it will be possible, for a number of complicated biological reasons that I don't feel like researching fully right now but maybe will in the future XD)
