Dose Ordo: Learning the Hard way

The sound of Cantina music was muzzled out by the sensors in Dose’s helmet. One by one it singled out voices of the patrons talking freely unaware of the scan. The heads up display cycled images in one corner while the audio display line dance wildly with every change. While Coronet was one of the galaxies larger more developed cities their cantinas located in the seedier parts could get just as rough as the Mos Eisley cantina.

Two drunken Corellains began to argue loudly and within seconds stood toe to toe, knocking their bar stools over. The jolt to near by patrons heightened tempers all throughout the loud cantina. Just then the HUD beeped rapidly and the targeting receptacle of his visor focused on the face of one of the drunken men outlining his head. The array of lights materialized into a spread sheet with the words “Target Identified” flashing boldly under the man’s mug shot. Cisco Bridge was his name, and his record scrolled in front of the Mandalorians eyes. He had already familiarized himself with the target so he quickly minimized the information to clear his view.

Calmly Dose made his way through the crowd, which was now nearly a standing shouting riot, towards the bar where Bridge stood, still shouting at the man in front of him. Gripping Bridge’s shoulder fiercely Dose forced his face down hard into the bar, then wrenched his opposite hand behind his back with the opposite hand. Before Dose could tether Bridge’s hands together he caught a glimps in his 360 degree view HUD. He stepped back quickly as a bar stool crashed into Bridge’s original drunken opponent, narrowly missing Dose’s head. Before the bits or broken stool hit the ground Dose swung his arm at the patron who had thrown the stool, shattering his nose against the plate on his armored glove, dropping him to the floor with a singe back hand.

The cantina noise silenced for a split second as the man hit the floor. Then as if turned back on the volume the crowd erupted into a violent storm of fists and shouting. A man lunged towards Dose with a raised fist but as if expecting it Dose snatched the mans arm against his own and thrust an open palm up words into his nose dropping him lifeless to the floor. Before he was able to ready himself for the next attacker he was grabbed around the neck by an unseen mans as yet another one drove his knee into the back of Dose’s leg, dropping him to a knee. Reaching over his head Dose grabbed the first man around the head of wrenching him up and over flipping him flat on his back through a table, shattering it to pieces in front of them. Dose pushed himself to stand, retrieved a retracting baton from his belt extending it to length in one single motion. The man that had just kneed him now reared back a fist that was met with a metal baton shattering his bones in his hand. He shrieked in pain but was silenced quickly with a second shot from the baton, this time to the throat, sending him hurling backwards to the floor.

The crowd scrambled for cover as the cantina lit with blaster fire. With only faint whimpers the smoke cleared revealing Bridge standing at the cantina door holding a smoking blaster. The armor plating of Dose chest armor smoked slightly from streaks of chard metal where the blast had landed clear hit. Bridge eyes grew large as he began to realize his shots only winded the angry hunter. Before he could fire again Dose hurled the baton across the room striking his hand forcing the blaster to the floor. With very little hesitation Bridge ran out the door and Dose gave chase.

Exiting the cantina Bridge climbing in a hurry onto a near by speeder bike and franticly began to start it. The blue flames under him doubled in size as he gave it all the speed he could. Dose hopped down onto another bike parked next to where Bridge had found his. The jolt from the landing sent spikes of pain through Dose body from the scorched flesh left by Bridge’s blaster. Removing a small chip from his bracer Dose placed it into the ignition of the speeder bike and the engine turned over, illuminating all the sensors. Wrenching the throttle violently the blue flames exploded as he darted off in the direction Bridge ran. Dose HUD picked up the heat signal of a single man moving erratically and rapidly a few hundred meters ahead of him, he was running scared.

Dose plugged a cable from his bracer into the speeders computer and began to run diagnostics of the bikes systems tweaking input and output maximizing potential anywhere it could until he started picking up ground on the fleeing target. Bridge looked quickly over his shoulder and began to panic at the sight of his hunter closing in on him. Extending his wrist forward Dose braced for the jolt of the fibercord shooting from its launcher striking into the rear of Bridge speeder knocking him slightly off balance for a second as the cord pulled tight. His speeder slowed slightly as Dose reeled him in like a tugging angler on a line. The metal plate began buckling at the connection point. Just out of arms reach the plate broke free jolting his speeder once again. The buildings flew by as blurs of lights and the humming strains of both engines topping out where all that could be heard. Dose pulled up beside him with an arm outstretched to snatch him. Ahead they both noticed the fork in the road divided by a permacrete wall. It was too late to change course, and if Dose let him lose now he may never get him back. With one last effort Dose snatched Bridge by the collar ripping him from his speeder right into the dividing wall stopping him instantly.

The jolt tore through Dose’s arm from the sudden stop of his grasped target and unseated him from his speeder. He hit the street, still at speed, skipping behind the now uncontrolled speeder, spinning with every bounce emitting broken parts of armor plating and sparks. The speeder rolled sharply and summer salted into the side of a building exploding on impact and was accompanied quickly as Dose hit the wall with a thud.

Broken and burnt he crawled painfully out of the fire collapsing just feet from the flames rolling over onto his back. When he caught his breath he reached over his chest grabbing his shoulder and pulling it away from his body forcefully with a loud pop, inhaling harshly lifting his back off the ground in pain. The shoulder had reset and he collapsed to the street again, breathing slowly but still in much pain. His HUD had gone dark and the lights on his bracer where now unlit. The only air entering his helmet came from the large cracks in the glass as the environmental unit no longer worked. Reaching into his belt he retrieved a small Bacta syringe, Jabbing it hard into his own thigh he wrenched in pain again then fell calm as the chemicals made their way through his blood stream. When Dose was able to muster the strength to stand he made his way to the front of the dividing wall where he’d last seen Bridge. Hid body lay badly broken in a pool of his own blood, he had died on impact for sure.

[Forge Shop]
“He wasn’t worth half as much dead as he was alive” Forge scolded. “And you, you’re worth nothing dead”. He stood over Dose, yanking the thread tightly to make his point, as he stitched closed the open wounds. “And look at your armor” He shouted, cutting the end of the thread, and then tossing the scissors onto a pile of broken armor. “All the skill and tech in the galaxy won’t help you if you’re not smart enough to stay alive”.

“You don’t need to scold me Forge, I know what I did was dumb. I acted to quickly, without thought”. Dose replied to the angry old man as he struggled to sit up. He pulled a shirt over his arm that was now held in a sling, sliding his good arm into its respecting sleeve. “You should invest in a Bacta tank you know” He said, with a hint of joking in his voice. “I shouldn’t need one, and I sure couldn’t use it” Forge held his cybernetic arm to Dose face, clinking his fingers together. “This shotty treatment should keep you alive long enough to find a safe tank somewhere Dos’ika. Now get some rest, we’ve got some new armor to be making now don’t we.”
