| Hey guys, I was bored the other day in class and was thinking about the meaning behind some names in Star Wars, most commonly the sith lords i.e.
Darth Sidious=insidious Darth Plageius (sp?)=plague Darth Maul=obvious Darth Tyrannus=tyranny etc... And a few days later in classiscal studies we were doing athenian democracy, and the ancient greek term "archon basileus" which is what the people that carried out religeous duties were called. This maybe the root of Bastila's name... Thoughts?
Can anybody think of any other names with hidden meanings? If so feel free to contribute...

| I've always thought about some of the odd names in the SW galaxy.
There is a Jedi named "Soon Bates" (killed by Grievous btw) = Master Bates, doesn't it make you wonder if this was done on purpose?
Nomi Sunrider = variation of Luke Skywalker = The letter L in relation to the letter K is how N is in relation to M. Same goes for the vowels U, E and O, I. i.e. Nomi = Luke, one consonant after and one vowel before. Since Luke walks on the sky, Nomi rides on the Sun.... obvious. :p
Starkiller = original concept name for Skywalker
Vader = Father (from a Scandinavian language)
Fett = Fat (Germanic language)
Boba = Dumb (female) (Asian/Hispanic language)
Bastila could have been based on "La Bastille" which is a Fortress/stronghold/prison in France during the revolution.
Many of the Jedi names in episode I and the following prequel movies are based on people that worked for LFL, which are mainly variations of their names. Even Jan Duursema, SW comicbook artist, had a Jedi named after her, "Ur Sema Du", and Nick Gillard, saber choreographer for the movies is "Cin Drallig" for example.
And of course all the Mando'ade that are based on people that Karen Traviss knows. "Ram Zerimar" who is Ray Ramirez, an active-duty sniper during the gulf war and a consultant for the Mando'a language. "Mij Gilamar" is James Gilmer who is one of her friends, and so on...
Enjoy the useless knowledge :p

Love it, Daennika!!! Han Solo = A lone wolf (Solo is obvious = one, alone, solo) Leia Organa = I'm thinking "organic," a sideways kind of opposite to Solo's hard side.

| Padme = lotus (Sanskrit)
Luc = obvious (Latin for "light"'s "lux")
Revan = revenge etc.
Yoda - can't help thinking it's somehow related to Yod, one of the Kabbalistic terms, but not sure.

| I feel so stupid for not realizing this one earlier. Prologue: So I was sitting in chat waiting for people to stop being "away" when I noticed the ads right above it. One was in Spanish and at first, I didn't understand why there would be Spanish ad on a site with mostly English words, etc. Then I noticed that one of the words in it was "mando" and I said to myself "Hmm, I really should have thought to check a Spanish dictionary for that word beforehand, because I've always thought it sounded like a Spanish word, kinda like Mundo." So I did. And the result made me want to facepalm, it was so obvious. http://www.spanishdict.com/translate/mando | |

| Canderous > Perhaps from the latin word Candidatus, which means applicant for office. Ordo > Latin for order. Ulic > There's a Slovakian village named Ulic, or it could have just come from the real life name Ulic. Exar > Could come from the word Exorcism or the word Axis. Munin > Old Norse for "the mind". Skirata > Skira is Mando'a for revenge. | |
