| I read about four chapters (approximately 100 pages) since I got the book yesterday, and I believe my comments below are pretty spoiler-free. However, don't hesitate to let me know if dropped any spoilers, and I'll fix my post to note that. Even though the action is minimal at this point and there's mostly set-up going on, I am absolutely enthralled by the story...especially the further details and daily life of the Mandalorians in the Skirata Clan. It's refereshing to see them as "normal" people in everyday situations...such as the fun little scene where the women-folk are making dinner. It reminded me very much of my Christmas holidays as a kid, and it was a nice touch of realism. I also like how Traviss takes the time to reiterate the background of the characters throughout the story because, just like Nephill Killer, there are a lot of characters and their histories that I was forgetting. So, that has really helped me mentally put the pieces of the characters back together in the map in my head. Overall, I can't possibly see how this will get wrapped up in two books with so much set-up taking place amongst at least the first four chapters, but I'll keep my faith in Traviss as a writer and see what she pulls out of her hat by the end of the series. | |

| For some reason, I wasn't aware that the book was releasing early (and also somehow managed to miss this whole thread...wtf.). Pretty sure it was originally scheduled for November. Anyways, I found out about it on the 28th that it had come out on the 27th so I bought it on the 29th and haven't gotten too terribly far yet (been busy). The plus side is that I got it for 5 bucks! Woohoo.
But, so far so good! I'm liking it. It makes me want to huggle everyone in the story and tell them that it'll all be okay but yeah. lol

| Oh, Dha'Aden, I'm so sorry about your book-finding troubles. I picked mine up at a Barnes and Noble, but I don't know if that's the store you tried or if there's another chain in your area. Do you have Borders around as well? I'm surprised that the big chains would fail on delivering such a popular franchise. That just sucks.
Good luck with finding the book. Looking forward to your thoughts as you read through it!

| Well, I finished the book a few days ago and didn't get a synopsis up until now. It was a good book and I blew through it while my Internet was down. - Spoiler:
The story begins with Ny Vollen at a spaceport, where she barely passes an Imperial checkpoint. She delivers her cargo, a Kaminoan Jedi named Kina Ha and a teenage female Jedi nicknamed Scout to Kyrimorut. Things are tense with the Jedi around.
Meanwhile, Niner and Dar attend an orientation meeting with Darth Vader, where they learn the 501st Commando Corps will be hunting down Jedi and deserters, including the Nulls and other clones with Kal. They are assigned to take out an Antarian Ranger called Jilam Kester. Two commandos, named Bry and Ennen, are also assigned with Niner and Dar on the same mission.
In Kyrimorut, everyone realizes that Kina Ha is at least a thousand years old and was genetically engineered for long life and received midi-chlorians by accident. They decide to use her genetics to try to find a way to stop the clone aging.
On the planet Celen, Squad Forty arrives. They head to Jilam's house which is surrounded by police. They enter, to find Jedi Master Camas, the commander of Republic Special Forces before Order 66. They fight, but Bry is killed by the Jedi before a gas line explodes, burning the house and Camas down with it. The only item of importance recovered is a computer.
Kal meets with Fenn Shysa, and Shysa asks Kal to have Bardan Jusik try to introduce Midi-Chlorians on Mandalore by having children. Kal refuses. Arla Fett is coming off medication, and is slightly crazy. Mij Gilimar monitors her.
Meanwhile, Niner and Dar meet with Jaller Obrim in a CSF Office. He had recovered data on the computer's memory chip, and gives it to Niner, telling him to get it to Kal at any cost.
The Nulls and Skirata hatch a plan to get Niner and Dar out of the barracks, and acquire stormtrooper suits. They also establish a secure comm link in Niner's helmet so they can talk to him. Commander Roly Melusar also takes command of the 501st Commando Corps, and appears to genuinely care about his men, and he quickly becomes popular, advocating for the complete destruction of Force users.
On Qail Uthan's homeworld, Gibad, her virus is used to destroy the planet's population, and in it, Uthan's relatives. Skirata gets Uthan working on an immunogen if in case Palpatine uses the virus on Mandalore.
The Nulls and Ny land on Coruscant, and Niner goes out with Darman in the city. Niner tells Darman that he wants to desert and Darman reluctantly agrees. The halfway there, he decides not to, saying he wants to help Kad by killing Force users. Niner goes ahead anyway, delivering the chip and fending off would-be thieves before returning to the 501st.
Melusar talks to Darman and Niner, saying he wants them to report only to him, as he doesn't trust other Imperials. They agree. On the chip, Jaing finds information on getting fugitives off of Coruscant, and Ny's name is on a list.
The Nulls also pick up Captain Maze, and General Zey is also with him. They are brought back to Kyrimorut, and greeted icily. Everyone discovers Maze staged Zey's death in order to get him off-planet.
A new commando, a Spaarti clone, Rede, is assigned to replace Bry. Ennen is more and more depressed by Bry's death and kills himself in the refreshers. Uthan finishes the immunogen, which is in a fever virus. She also begins gathering materials to create her killer virus to unleash on Coruscant as revenge for the Imperial slaughter at Gibad.
Squad Forty is deployed to fight a man with a lightsaber on Coruscant, and take him out easily. They then discover he was simply a thief with a saber, not a trained Jedi. Rede proves himself in taking out the man, who was named Yelgo.
The Nulls attach a secure link for Darman, so he can talk to Kad. Skirata decides to find a way to get rid of the Force users, and contacts Jedi Master Altis. They meet, and Altis agrees. Kal decides when the time comes, to erase the Jedis' minds so they have no memory of Kyrimorut. Jusik agrees to do it.
Everyone heads out to Keldabe to spread the immunogen, which they carry. They run into Dred Priest, and discover he is a member of a new Death Watch. Gilimar kills him.
Darman and Niner are assigned to destroy Altis and his small group. Darman decides to return to Kyrimorut at the news that there are Jedi there. He also decides to take out the Jedi to protect Kad. They ask Roly Melusar if they can go to Mandalore to get some Intel, and he agrees. The two plan to desert then.
I give the book a three star rating, as some parts seemed kinda lame and nothing shocking or amazing really happened (I didn't like Darman changing his mind about desertion all the time). But it was still good and I recommend it to people who have read the RC series.

| Thanks for the detailed spoiler, Nephill! I actually just finished the book this morning and have to admit that I had a hard time putting it down.
POTENTIAL SPOILER:
I was really entranced by the descriptions of daily Mando life and sometimes found that part of the story more interesting than Dar and Niner's predicaments. I was highly attracted to the concept of the house full of 30 people (give or take), how they interacted daily, and how they leapfrogged their way around each other while caring for everyone as a whole.
I actually liked more of the "mush," such as a moment told through Ny's eyes in which Besany is unknowingly adoring Ordo as he handles Kad. It's the kind of reality that I, myself, feel for my husband when I see him handling our kids as well as others with a gentle hand. In that moment, it could have easily been someone watching my family interact, and it made the moment personal for me.
I, too, agree that Dar was getting on my nerves with his indecisions. However, my reasons are more because, as a mother, I couldn't understand how he didn't desert when he had the opportunity. It was as bad to me as Etain wanting to go back to war right after giving birth. I tried to remind myself that Darman is just a kid who doesn't know which way to go in the galaxy, either the one under the Old Republic or the one under the Empire. I tried to be reasonable about that, but the other side of me was boiling about how these young parents just walk away from their kids because they THINK their absence does them better. BULLSHIT! Kids need a parent who cares about them and because Dar cares and loves Kad he belongs with him, not fighting ghosts from a distance. I know that the Mando way is to adopt younglings and carry on with teaching them, but that should NOT be an excuse for a parent who is able and capable to ignore his or her responsibility. (Sorry, soapbox rant over...)
Overall, I enjoyed the book as well and can only imagine that there's going to be a lot of character holes by the end of it. I have a couple predictions about why certain characters aren't mentioned in the Legacy of the Force novels that Traviss wrote. I'm hoping it's just because they weren't necessary to the plot, but I can't help wondering how much of those absences were preplanned. Hmmmm...
Looking forward to other opinions!

| I wanna start this post by thanking you guys for expressing your opinion on the episode! Even just a little activity in MandoBoard is making me giddy. I just finished going through "501st" today and here's my critic/review. I'm gonna try to keep it spoiler-free you know, cause I'm the boss and everything.
First off, I knew what kind of events we could expect after the settlement in Order 66 so I wasn't surprised about certain decisions made, some of the ideas thrown around and what happened with a few characters. Remember that I've written post-Order 66 fan fiction last year so a lot of this episode rang a few bells.
I'll start with the negative points: it's a clone story, but at the same time it isn't. K.T. tries very hard to keep her focus on "the boys" reminding us several times that they need DNA fixing, retirement funds and safe haven to get back on their feet after going AWOL. But not much of that gets done in fact, and everything seems to get in the way of actually bringing more clones into the pictures. Quite the contrary in fact when she offs two of them while bringing a Centax 2 second generation trooper, and he did more than alright. That one little bit was really the only clone-related topic in the whole story. So if you can filter out her usual banter on "clones are people too" and every technicality of their existence, Darman and Niner's chapters can be enjoyed.
Otherwise this is actually pretty decent mando food. Key characters have lots of self doubts and identity crisis on different levels. Romances sprout between unexpected (and unnecessary...) characters while I'd personally wanted them in other places for excitements. But I feel in the end that KT was just throwing the emotional hammer on her favorite boys for the sake of her monologues and to twist the plot around. Thirty-odd characters is a LOT to keep track of especially when the POV switches between half a dozen of them. I'm just grateful we weren't smacked in the crazy mind of Arla Vhett although everybody was feeling like they were going insane under pressure.
Now the positive sides: like I said it's good mando stuff. We get to learn about the Death Watch, some ancient history, mandalorian leadership and organization. BUT it also pleases the Jedi fans in the way that it challenges the given assumptions that all Jedi are the same. I don't have much sympathy for them but it was nice to see different options, more colorful characters and genuine compassion between unlikely parts.
What also had me pleased were a couple of tactical ops scenes quite well handled. +1 for Imperial Armed Forces, whatever and whoever it is under the plastoid armor.
And now for my personal gripe with KT that is the case of Bardan Jusik: WHY CAN'T YOU GIVE THE POOR KID A BREAK AND MAKE HIM MEET A NICE GIRL TO HAVE AWKWARD AND CUTE MOMENTS WITH?! I'm feeling more and more that she's using Jusik as a vessel for her own Force-related ramblings. I don't know if making him go through all the osik of caring for everyone, worrying for the whole clan, trying hard not to disappoint is really leading anywhere.
That's my final feeling upon finishing this book: it's very anti-climatic and I doubt just a single sequel would settle this whole mess that is the Empire - Jedi - Mando love/hate triangle.

Good point, Daennika! There were so many things I wanted to put in my synopsis without getting too spoiler-like, and this was one of those things I forgot to mention. Yes, where IS the Bard'ika LOVE??? Poor man. He's NOT a Jedi anymore. He can get on with life and do NORMAL relationships and the like. Sheesh.

| Thanks for acknowledging my opinion MMJ, too often I feel like these books attract the views of one-sided personalities who only see what they want to see in a story, which I'm partly guilty of. Several weeks after reading "501st" I try to remember it and whatever come ontop of my head is this: The freaking Kyrimorut kitchen scenes. What. The. Eff. Warm home feelings and peaceful atmosphere aside, my feministic liberal anti-conformist nazi within is crying at the completely backwards model of society KT has been portraying. Nyreen is a smuggler, a strong independent woman who has better to do than just stand around chopping vegetables and baking cookies. Same with As opposed to her I was more happy about Qail Uthan even though she's a labrat, she doesn't serve anybody. So if you're a woman and end up in the Kyrimorut bastion, you'd better have a damn good excuse to contribute or else they're gonna send you to the stove. Besany, Jilka... I'm looking at you. Instead of trying to fit in, combat training, talking with the guys, all we see of them is just being good little wives and girlfriends. WHAT THE FUCK. Oh and, everybody is woken up in the middle of the night and gathers around Bardan who got headbutted in the nose by Crazy Arla Fett, but hey! Look! He's alright because he's a just a JEDI. Yeah, go to sleep and let's not talk about it again. Nice hivemind psychology there, Mrs Traviss. Today I don't like this series anymore. | |

Thanks, Daennika, for really getting the pot stirring with your post! By the end of this we may agree to disagree, and I’m fine with that. I just thought I’d offer my 2 credits worth of opinions, since I can honestly say I’ve shared your opinion once before in my life. Okay, while it seems that the kitchen scenes would not be typical for Mandalorians on a homestead – they are nomadic people and all – I have to admit that I was rather fascinated by these slices of “normal” life with a Star Wars twist on them. As I stated once before, they reminded me of my family gatherings as a child, and it was nice to see it somewhere other than my memories. Rather than bore you with the long-winded explanation I had originally written up, here’s my summary: Kid – Spent time with my cousins and played like a normal kid ignoring all facets of the adults. The men talked politics and sports; the women talked childrearing, botany, and cooking. Teen/20-Something Adult – Wanted nothing to do with either men conversations or women conversations. Cousins were now in another realm with significant others; and I was growing hopeless that I’d ever meet someone. Decided that being a loner had its advantages. 30-Something Adult – After having gotten married, taking on a stepson, and bearing a child, I find myself discussing childrearing, botany, and cooking with BOTH my aunts and my cousins. Who knew that would EVER happen?? What I’m saying is that I WAS YOU, Daennika! Once in my life, I would have read 501st and threw it across the room for no other reason than Traviss stereotyping a typical family gathering. I used to get so annoyed when I saw my aunts cooking and cleaning while the men sat on chairs with happy, full bellies. I used to scream Women’s Lib and that they should start earning their keep, too. Then, something changed in me drastically in the last few years, and the experiences I gained as a wife and mother came through those pages and awoke wonderful memories in me of a time when I was young and innocent, and life was nothing more than role-playing Star Wars, Voltron, and Battle of the Planets with my cousins. Reading now those kitchen scenes from the perspective of a mother, a wife, and everything that came in between, I found those scenes were pure comfort. So, I’m just saying that you’re not wrong to feel angry, but maybe in ten-fifteen years from now if you read 501st again, it might just not sound the same.

Now, that's something we ALL can agree on! (Speaking of...I'm waiting for more of the Chronicles from Mandalore story... ) Anway, I'm sure you know I meant no disrespect. I was just being the voice of experience, trying to explain how you never know how life will change and how one day you might find yourself mellowed out all of a sudden. Ten years ago, I couldn't imagine being a mother, and I wanted nothing to do with kids. Now, I can't live without my son. So, let's all move on, share our controversies, and give each other a hug at the end of it. More than blood, right?

| I liked it. Not as much as I liked the others, but it was still cool. BEWARE OF SPOILERS!!!!!! RAWR!! in fact, just to be safe.... - Spoiler:
I was a little upset with the random jedi nonsense. Especially when Maze called up and I thought that this meant that the "Clone Retirement inc." was actually going to start doing it's job but it turned out to be more jedi nonsense. And freaking Maze didn't have the balls to kill Zey which was... frusturating to say the least. Much as I like Djinn Altis, I thought he could have been left out, too. All he really did was complicate things and show me (again) that Etain needed to get her priorities straightened out. The random love interests thrown in also seemed, well, random. And Jusik was left out. Of course, that puts a cramp in Shysa's evil mastermind plan, which makes me imagine Shysa setting Jusik up with random girls. I liked the romance between Mij and Uthan. It seemed so adorable and filled me with a warm and fuzzy "awwww" feeling for a while. (He also gained a permanent place on my list of favorite characters with his speech about empires and that RepoMan move he did on Mr. Deathwatch-crazyman. So freaking cool.)
yep... that's about it...

in fact, just to be safe....
- Spoiler:

yep... that's about it... "Clone Retirement Inc." haha! classic I approve of that [spoiler] code! And all in all, my feelings have calmed down about the no-sequel issue now. The story's cut short but I think we can all speculate on what likely turns this series would have taken, and we can be happy with the things we know for sure: everyone ending up marrying someone and living happily ever after. Or so it seems.
